Winsor (Nar. and crit. hist., 1887, v. 5, p. 337) says that this Hilton would seem to be William Hilton of Massachusetts (d. 1675) "who had already explored parts of this country." This expedition first visited the neighborhood of Port Royal, then sailed northeastward along the South Carolina coast, concluding with a careful exploration of Cape Fear River.
